The Easiest Ways to Incorporate Organ Meats (Even If You Hate Them)

High quality animal organs are gram for gram the most nutrient-dense foods that exist, but if the idea of eating liver makes you gag… you’re not alone. I vehemently HATE the taste of beef liver but have found other ways to sneak them in where I can.

To read more about different sources of meat, check out this post.

Chicken Liver vs Beef Liver

Chicken liver is MUCH more mild and easy to eat than beef liver. There is just something about beef liver that is SO foul… I just can’t do it haha. Beef heart, since it’s a muscle, is MUCH more mild. Below are some of my favorite (and easy) ways to start incorporating organs. While fresh cooked organ meats are always going to be superior to a desiccated form, I figure getting less benefit from a desiccated form is better than nothing at all!

Also, in terms of desiccated organs (powders and pills), there are a TON on the market. These are just a few that I personally use on the regular whose quality I trust.

Ground Beef Organ Blend

This is a great way to get “fresh organ meats” in. To further hide the taste, use your ground beef organ blends for tacos, pasta sauces, and other menu items with lots of flavor. If it’s still too much, then mix one pound of organ blend ground beef with one pound of regular ground beef. Start slow if you need to, because some is better than none!

Beef Liver

- Store in the freezer and grate a little on top of meals
- Chop it into tiny pieces, store in the freezer, and swallow them like pills
- Add a little bit of frozen raw into a smoothie (like .25 ounces)

With raw liver, I only consume raw beef liver from extremely reputable sources that I trust like U.S. Wellness Meats…never from Whole Foods or other grocery stores where I am unsure of the source.

Chicken Liver

  • Liver pate – this is very easy to make and people love it, but truthfully not my favorite

  • Grind up chicken liver into a puree and then stir into a soup at the end of its cooking, and you will not even know it’s there! You can’t see nor taste it. We do this in our Creamy Chicken and Rice Congee.

Bone Marrow

This is definitely an easier, more palatable one to incorporate. Roasted bone marrow on sourdough is delicious. We also love bone marrow custard and bone marrow butter. Sometimes when I’m pressed for time, I’ll cook the bone in a skillet with the lid on until the marrow comes out and cook it fully, and then mash it up into whatever we’re eating. This is a really baby-friendly food too. A lot of health food stores like Whole Foods, Sprouts, etc. sell marrow bones, or you can buy them online on sites like US Wellness Meats.

Organised Powder - Code: ROOTS for 10% off

This is a current favorite of mine! It contains grass-fed beef protein, collagen, colostrum, liver, heart, kidney, spleen, lung, raw honey, maple syrup, dates, and Celtic sea salt. I use a little scoop of this in our protein shakes and you can’t taste it at all. It’s a bit pricey, but look at the quality and all that it includes… I feel like it’s worth it!

Heart and Soil - Code: ROOTS for 10% off

This is a great source for all kinds of different organ pills. It is very user-friendly and easy to search by what you’re looking to support. They also now have protein powders (which I have yet to try!).

Ancestral Supplements - Code: ROOTS for 15% off

Ancestral Supplements is my other company to buy organ pills from. I trust their quality, and what I love about their offerings is that they sell a lot of single organs. Like supports like when it comes to organs… aka liver supports your liver, thyroid supports your thyroid, etc. I used to take their thyroid and adrenal when I needed support. My step-dad takes their lung to support a lung issue he has, and my dad is taking their prostate and has seen his numbers improve. I’m a big fan of incorporating specific organs in addition to other things to support healing.

Pluck - Code: ROOTS for 15% Off

We’ve had Pluck seasoning since the very beginning! They have expanded their offerings quite a bit, and I have yet to try them all. They sell their organ blends in a powder, which is great for adding a little bit into protein shakes or mixing into food for kids who can’t take pills. They have their pure version but now also have zesty garlic, spicy mild, and an original (umami flavor). It is EXTREMELY user-friendly to just sprinkle a little on top of any meal.

Just do the best you can and find the ways that you can be consistent…we’re for consistency, not perfection!  Be sure to share your tips and what works for you here!
