The Forgotten Ingredient:
You've researched the herbs. You've sourced the grass-fed bone broth. You've read every study on postpartum nutrition. But there's one ingredient that makes up the majority of your body and is in every dish we prepare that most meal prep services don’t think twice about.
Water.
The water used to wash your produce. The water your grains and legumes absorb as they cook. The water that becomes the base of your soups, your broths, your herbal teas. If that water is carrying chlorine, chloramines, heavy metals, or pharmaceutical residues, those compounds don't simply disappear during cooking. They become part of your meal. In the postpartum window, when your body is doing its most profound healing work, that matters.
At Restorative Roots, we made a decision early on: we would not cut corners on water. That's why we've invested in not one, but two water filtration systems for our kitchen that go far beyond what any standard tap water can offer.

The Problem With Tap Water (Even "Clean" Tap Water)
Municipal water in the United States is treated to meet EPA safety thresholds, but "safe enough" and "optimal for healing" are very different standards.
Common contaminants found in treated tap water include:
-
Chlorine and chloramines — added to kill bacteria, but linked to gut microbiome disruption and the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during cooking
-
Heavy metals (lead, arsenic, copper) — leached from aging pipes; associated with neurological effects and hormonal disruption
-
Nitrates — from agricultural runoff; particularly concerning for newborns and nursing mothers
-
Pharmaceutical residues — including hormones and antibiotics that pass through treatment systems incompletely
-
Microplastics — increasingly documented in municipal water supplies
-
Fluoride — added intentionally, but emerging research raises questions about thyroid function at accumulated doses
For someone in postpartum recovery whose gut is rebalancing, whose hormones are recalibrating, and whose immune system is rebuilding, minimizing this background chemical load isn't a luxury. It's a necessity.
Our First System: The 3-Stage Deluxe Whole House Water Filter — Ultimate Protection
View the filter here.
This is the backbone of our water infrastructure. A whole-house system means every water source in our kitchen: every faucet, every pot, and every rinsing station draws from filtered water. Nothing slips through.
How It Works
The system runs water through three distinct filtration stages, each targeting a different category of contaminants:
Stage 1 — Sediment Pre-Filter: Captures particles, rust, sand, and debris down to 5 microns. This protects the downstream filters and removes visible and invisible particulate matter.
Stage 2 — Activated Carbon Block Filter: This is where the heavy lifting happens. Activated carbon has an enormous surface area that chemically adsorbs chlorine, chloramines, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pesticides, herbicides, industrial chemicals, and most pharmaceutical residues. It also significantly improves taste and odor, which translates directly into better-tasting food.
Stage 3 — High-Capacity Carbon or KDF Filter: The final polishing stage targets heavy metals (including lead and mercury), hydrogen sulfide, and any remaining organic compounds that passed through Stage 2.
Why This Matters for Cooking
Water quality affects food in ways most people never consider:
-
Chlorine inhibits fermentation — if you've ever wondered why your bone broth or fermented foods taste "off," chlorinated water is often the culprit
-
Heavy metals accumulate in foods cooked in contaminated water, particularly in grains, legumes, and leafy greens that absorb water as they cook
-
Chloramines react with organic matter at high heat, forming trihalomethanes (THMs) — compounds classified as probable human carcinogens
-
Clean water preserves nutrients — cooking greens in chlorinated water can degrade heat-sensitive vitamins more rapidly
Our Second System: The Whole House Analemma Water Unit

This is where our commitment to water quality takes a step beyond conventional filtration and into the emerging science of water coherence and structured water.
What Is Structured Water?
Water isn't simply H₂O molecules floating in random arrangement. Research in biophysics, particularly the work of Dr. Gerald Pollack at the University of Washington and the pioneering research behind the Analemma technology, has demonstrated that water molecules organize themselves into dynamic, ordered structures under certain conditions.
This ordered state, sometimes called "exclusion zone" (EZ) water, coherent water, or structured water, is the form water takes inside your cells, in living plants, and in natural spring sources. It has measurably different properties than conventional tap or filtered water:
-
Higher energy state (measurable by infrared spectroscopy)
-
Altered viscosity and surface tension
-
Enhanced ability to carry nutrients across cell membranes
-
Reduced oxidative potential
How the Analemma Works
The Analemma device doesn't filter water, it restructures it. The unit contains a specially prepared full life-cycle water matrix inside a quartz crystal tube. As water passes through or is treated by the device, it entrains to this coherent structure, reorganizing the hydrogen bond network of the water into a more ordered, biological-ready state.
This technology has been the subject of independent research examining effects on:
-
Mitochondrial membrane potential in human cells
-
Gut microbiome diversity in clinical trials
-
Inflammatory biomarkers
-
Plant growth and root development (often used as a proxy for biological vitality)
Why We Use Both Systems
Think of it this way: the 3-Stage system removes what shouldn't be in your water. The Analemma restores what water loses in the journey through municipal treatment and pipes, its natural coherence, its vitality. Together, they deliver water that is both clean and biologically optimized.

How Water Quality Affects Your Postpartum Recovery Meals
Every dish we prepare at Restorative Roots is touched by our filtered, structured water:
-
Bone broths and soups — the base liquid becomes deeply infused into every sip
-
Grains and legumes — absorb up to 2–3x their dry weight in water during cooking
-
Steamed vegetables — exposed to water vapor throughout the cooking process
-
Herbal preparations — the quality of water directly affects the extraction of medicinal compounds from herbs
-
All produce washing — removes surface residues without introducing new chemical exposures
Questions to Ask Your Meal Prep Provider About Water
If you work with any food service, postpartum or otherwise, you should be aware of what's in the water going into your meals. Here are five questions worth asking:
-
"What water source do you use for cooking and food preparation?" (Tap water is the default answer at most facilities.)
-
"Do you have any filtration system in place? If so, what does it filter for?" (A basic Brita pitcher and a whole-house multi-stage system are not the same.)
-
"Has your water been tested recently? Can you share those results?" (Reputable providers should be able to answer this.)
-
"Do you use the same water for washing produce as for cooking?" (Cross-contamination at the wash stage is often overlooked.)
-
"Have you considered how your water quality affects the nutrient density of the meals you prepare?"(This question alone will tell you a lot about how deeply a provider thinks about their ingredients.)

Our Promise: Every Detail, Every Ingredient, Every Time
At Restorative Roots, we believe that postpartum recovery deserves the same rigor and intentionality that goes into your birth plan, your care team, and your supplement protocol. The healing window after birth is precious and unrepeatable. The meals you eat during that time are building blocks for your long-term health, your milk supply, and your return to vitality.
Water is not a background detail. It's an active ingredient in everything we make.
Our investment in the 3-Stage Deluxe Whole House Filtration System and the Analemma Structured Water unit reflects a simple belief: if we're going to do this, we're going to do it right, all the way down to the molecules.
You deserve nothing less.
